The event is part of the process for the conduct of three thematic studies that the AICHR has adopted: the thematic studies on the right to life, legal aid and juvenile justice. Owing to their relevance and complementarity to the Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Access to Justice), AICHR Thailand as the lead country for the three thematic studies proposes to combine the consultation for the right to life study, the launch/release of the legal aid study, and the meeting of researchers on juvenile justice in one event to render most efficient the time and resources of relevant parties and to achieve synergised outcomes. The following are key timelines of the three studies. Their adopted concept notes are appended to this document.
The three thematic studies are part of the mandate of the AICHR (Article 4.12 of the AICHR TOR). Their conduct and outcomes contribute directly to the community-building efforts of ASEAN in two important ways. Firstly, they further the understanding and enhance the shared value of human rights, particularly access to justice, which are espoused in the ASEAN Charter and reaffirmed in the ASEAN Vision 2025. Secondly, their relevance to SDG16 is unequivocal. The discussion on the three studies will provide opportunities for ASEAN stakeholders and sectoral bodies to strategise their implementation of SDG16.
